What spelling level should my students be at?
This is a very common question, and an important one—but the answer may not be what you expect.
There Is No “Fixed” Level by Age (Yet)
Historically, Spellings for Me has not used date of birth data, which means we have not been able to create exact benchmarks such as:
“An 8-year-old should be at Level X”
“A 10-year-old should be at Level Y”
Because of this, there is currently no official age-to-level comparison within the system.
What’s Changing (Version 2)
With Version 2 of Spellings for Me, schools now have the option to include date of birth data when uploading students.
This is a significant step forward.
As more schools include this data, we will begin to:
Build accurate age-based benchmarks
Identify average levels by age group
Compare performance across different regions and countries
For example, in the future we aim to provide insights such as:
The average spelling level for 8-year-olds in Ireland vs England
Typical progression rates by age
National and international comparisons
However, this data is still being built, so these comparisons are not yet available.
So How Should You Measure Progress Right Now?
Instead of focusing on “what level a student should be at,” we recommend focusing on progress and improvement over time.
1. Compare Students Within Your Class
On your Teacher Dashboard:
You can view all students in your class
Click on the Level column to sort students by ability
This allows you to quickly see:
Who is above the class average
Who may need additional support
2. Focus on Words Learned (Key Metric)
The most important measure of progress in Spellings for Me is:
👉 How many words a student has mastered
To view this:
Go to Performance Insights
Click into Charts
Hover over a student’s name
You will see:
Words learned this year
Words learned in previous years
3. Track Year-on-Year Improvement
The goal is simple:
👉 Each student should improve on their previous year
For example:
Year 1: 200 words mastered
Year 2: 215+ words mastered
Year 3: Continued increase
This gives a clear, personalised measure of progress, regardless of starting level.
Key Takeaway
There is no single “correct” spelling level for a given age—yet.
Instead, focus on:
Individual progress
Consistent improvement
Total words mastered over time
As more data becomes available, Spellings for Me will introduce more detailed benchmarking tools—but for now, progress is the most meaningful measure of success.
