Overview
Spellings for Me is built on Microsoft Azure and includes intelligent design features to maintain the integrity of spelling tests. One important factor is ensuring that autocorrect and spell check tools do not interfere with student responses during tests. These built-in assistive tools can unintentionally give pupils correct answers, especially on touchscreen devices like tablets.
This article outlines how our system interacts with autocorrect features across different devices and how users can manually manage these settings.
✅ Devices Where Autocorrect/Spell Check Is Automatically Disabled
Our platform automatically disables autocorrect and spell check when students are logged in on:
Laptops (Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS)
Desktops
Apple iPads (when settings are managed via our platform)
In these cases, the autocorrect feature is suppressed while taking tests, ensuring the pupil types the word based on their own knowledge.
⚠️ Android Tablets: Manual Action Required
Android devices do not allow our software to override autocorrect settings.
This means the user must manually turn off autocorrect and predictive text before the test.
🔧 How to Turn Off Autocorrect on Most Android Devices:
Open the Settings app.
Go to System → Languages & Input → On-screen Keyboard.
Select the keyboard in use (commonly Gboard).
Tap Text Correction.
Disable the following:
Auto-correction
Show Suggestion Strip
Spell Check (if present)
⚠️ Note: Steps may vary slightly depending on the make and model of the Android device (e.g., Samsung, Huawei, Lenovo).
If you're unsure, you can:
Do a quick Google search:
"How to disable autocorrect on [Your Device Model]"
Or contact us directly and we’ll guide you through it.
💡 On iPads: Still Seeing Autocorrect?
If you're using an Apple iPad and still seeing autocorrect or predictive text appear, it may have been manually re-enabled in your device settings.
Just get in touch and we’ll make sure everything is configured correctly on your device.
📌 Final Notes
Disabling spell check ensures that pupils’ errors are captured correctly, feeding into their Learning Words list.
Autocorrect can affect test results by giving away correct spellings, so always confirm it's turned off before testing begins—especially on shared or home devices.
If you're unsure whether autocorrect is interfering with your pupil’s test, you can do a quick test entry with a deliberate mistake to confirm it's not being corrected.
